Moving on Up!

Back in 1960, when the median income in the U.S. was $5600, or $21.50 a day, my father paid $11,000 for our first house. Due to the cost of borrowing money, I’m not sure the little three-bedroom place was paid off when I left home in 1976.

Now look at what it takes to build.

A cheap camper costs more. Then add on the pickup to pull it.

Different sources state Uganda’s average income (today) is $190 to $260 a month, $2280 to $3120 a year. Using the former number and a five-day workweek, that’s $8.70 (One Grande mocha, frap, no, no, shaken not stirred, coffee at Starbucks with tip) a day.

Wow.

Our plan was to renovate the existing house but due to the condition of that structure and cost, we found it more economical and efficient to simply start over. Therefore, with the donations we’ve received, we are rebuilding the orphanage for $9000. That’s just the shell, roof, interior walls and windows and doors reinstalled.

We’re getting quotes now to do the electrical work. Unlike what we’re used to in the west, the kitchen and bathroom will be small unattached structures close by. Since most of the cooking is done over charcoal, I understand why.

Christmas was great for the kids. Mats and blankets and food. They are all generally well. Malaria and typhoid knocks on their door incessantly, but we thank God that both have left them be the past month.

God bless and thank you for your support.
